3D Ground Scanners:
Uncover What Centuries Have Kept Hidden
Reveal treasures, artefacts and cavities – with detection technology from Germany and search depths of up to 40 metres. For the treasure hunter who demands more.
Most detectorists know the moment: the signal is there, the spade is ready – and after hours of work, nothing but junk comes to light.
A 3D ground scanner changes the game entirely. Instead of an acoustic hint, you receive a three-dimensional visualisation of your search area – with precise information about the position and nature of the target. You see exactly where to dig before you ever reach for the shovel.
At OKM, we have been developing and manufacturing these instruments for over 25 years in Altenburg, Germany. Every ground scanner is hand-built, individually tested and shipped – with the depth performance, precision and quality that professional treasure hunting demands.

How a 3D Ground Scanner Works
A 3D ground scanner records magnetic field data as you walk systematically across your search area. The device display provides initial visual readouts directly on site during the scan. For the full analysis, the data is transferred to OKM's proprietary Visualizer 3D Studio software, which translates everything into a colour-coded 3D visualisation: every anomaly in the subsurface – whether a metallic object or a cavity – appears as a visible anomaly on your notebook.
More Than Just a Scanner
Most OKM 3D ground scanners combine multiple operating modes in a single device.
In addition to the classic 3D Ground Scan, further functions are available depending on the model:
- Magnetometer for a quick preliminary check of an area for near-surface iron objects
- Pinpointer for precise localisation just before breaking ground
- Mineral Scan for detecting mineral-bearing structures, e.g. during gold prospecting
-
VLF metal detection for classic discrimination between metal types
– including the features you know from conventional metal detectors
With a single OKM detector, you cover what other users need multiple detectors for.

Depth Performance That Other Devices Cannot Match
Classic VLF and PI detectors quickly reach their limits with deeper targets. OKM 3D ground scanners reach up to 25 metres into the subsurface, depending on the model. For those who want to go even deeper, the portfolio is complemented by the Gepard GPR 3D – a ground penetrating radar that achieves depths of up to 40 metres using its own proprietary technology.
With the magnetic field sensors of a 3D ground scanner, you can locate deeply buried coin hoards just as readily as burial chambers, bunkers or tunnel systems – all from the safety of the surface, long before the first spadeful of earth is turned.

From Construction Sites to Gold Veins
OKM 3D ground scanners are deployed wherever depth performance and precise localisation are what count. Detectorists use them in historically significant regions – at ancient settlement sites, along historic trade routes or in areas with documented coin find histories. Gold prospectors work with them in geologically rich terrain, where native gold and mineral structures lie deep beneath the surface. Both user groups share the same expectation: reliable results where conventional detectors reach their limits.
In archaeology, civil engineering and utility line location, OKM 3D ground scanners are also part of the professional toolkit – wherever the subsurface must be reliably assessed before any intervention takes place.
The right device class is best discussed directly with one of our specialists.
