Discovered by Treasure Hunter from Syria
Deep beneath the soil of Syria, down to 4.5 m (15 ft) underground, a series of historical artifacts were uncovered using the OKM eXp 5500 Professional. A group of treasure hunters found many objects, like coins, jewelry, and religious items. Some of these objects clearly date back to the Byzantine era. They offer new insight into a region that was once shaped by Roman and Byzantine civilizations.

According to the explorer, the area was likely first settled during the early Roman period and later inhabited by Byzantine populations. Although only one Byzantine coin had been found with previous equipment, using the OKM detector revealed a much broader picture of the region’s buried history.
The region is rich in coins. Before using the OKM detector, we had located only one single Byzantine coin using a different device.

Traces of the Byzantine Empire
Among the finds, a decorated oil lamp with cross symbolism stands out in particular. This lamp is a clear sign of the Christian Byzantine era, when the cross was a religious and imperial symbol. Such lamps were used in churches and wealthy households, reflecting the fusion of faith, everyday life, and craftsmanship.
Numerous coins, recovered in various states of preservation, bear the distinct features of Byzantine minting, such as imperial portraits, cross motifs, and Greek inscriptions. These coins served not only as currency, but also as instruments for conveying political and religious messages throughout the Eastern Mediterranean.

In addition to coins and religious items, various pieces of jewelry and small ceramic vessels were found. Some pieces are simple, while others are ornate, suggesting they had a variety of social uses, including trade, domestic life, and ceremonies. Their preservation indicates that they remained undisturbed for centuries in stable soil layers.
Legacy Beneath the Surface: What These Finds Reveal
These recent finds from Syria are a powerful testament to the region’s rich cultural heritage. The Byzantine-era objects, in particular, provide valuable insight into the faith, daily routines, and artistic traditions of that period. Each item tells the story of people who lived, believed, and traded over a thousand years ago. Their traces are now more visible than ever. Thanks to the precision and depth capabilities of the OKM eXp 5500 Professional 3D ground scanner, artifacts that had remained hidden for centuries — some as deep as 4.5 meters — have now been brought back into the light.
