Top 11 Most Valuable Lost Treasures in History

#1 Amber Room

Value: €125 to 200 million

The Amber Room remains one of the most iconic and mysterious treasures in European history. Originally gifted from Prussian King Frederick William to Russian Tsar Peter the Great in 1716, the legendary chamber was crafted from several tons of amber, gemstones and gold leaf. Individual panels alone were valued at more than €2 million even before World War II.

Since 1945, the Amber Room has been considered lost. After being stolen from the Catherine Palace near Saint Petersburg, the room was displayed in Königsberg Palace (Kaliningrad) from 1941 onward. When the palace caught fire in 1944, the room was dismantled, packed into crates and disappeared. Whether it is hidden in underground bunkers, collapsed mining tunnels across Germany, Poland or Lithuania, or lost at sea aboard a sunken submarine remains one of the greatest unsolved treasure mysteries of our time.

#2 Yamashita's Gold

Value: €20 billion

Yamashita’s treasure is said to be one of the largest war-loot collections ever assembled. The stash reportedly consists of gold bars, gemstones and sacred artifacts — including a one-ton Buddha statue — worth an estimated €20 billion today. These valuables were allegedly seized from Southeast Asian nations during World War II.

General Tomoyuki Yamashita is believed to have hidden the treasure across multiple secret tunnels in the Philippines. Before he could reveal its locations, he was executed for war crimes in 1946. Rumors persist that many of the treasure chambers were protected by water traps and mines, making recovery exceptionally dangerous.

#3 Honjo Masamune Sword

Value: €720,000

The Honjo Masamune is regarded as one of the finest Japanese katanas ever forged. Crafted by the legendary swordsmith Masamune, the blade stood out for its extraordinary sharpness and unmatched steel quality — especially remarkable considering the inconsistent materials available during its era.

The sword became a powerful symbol of the Tokugawa shogunate and was passed down through generations. After World War II, it disappeared, and its location is still unknown. Today, its estimated value exceeds €720,000, though its cultural significance is considered priceless.

#4 Wreck of the Galleon San José

Value: €115 billion

The galleon San José was one of the most heavily loaded treasure ships in history, carrying over 200 tons of gold, silver and emeralds. On June 7, 1708, while transporting these riches from Spanish Colombia to King Philip V, the ship was intercepted and sunk by the British Navy in the Caribbean Sea.

The wreck, discovered off the coast of Cartagena, Colombia, is considered the most valuable sunken treasure ever found. Legal disputes over its ownership continue to this day, given its immense cultural and financial worth.

#5 Temple Treasure of Jerusalem

Silver coins and golden relics

The Temple Treasure of Jerusalem is believed to contain precious offerings from wealthy Jerusalem families as well as ritual objects from the ancient Jewish temple. The hoard includes silver coins, gold objects and legendary artifacts such as the Golden Menorah and the Golden Table.

Throughout history, various conquerors claimed to have seized or moved these items, yet their final fate remains an enduring mystery.

#6 The Tsar's Gold

Value: €8.8 billion

The Tsar’s gold played a crucial financial role in the Russian Empire during World War I. It included vast quantities of gold bars, platinum, gold coins and silver coins — making it one of the largest known treasure hoards in imperial history.

As enemy forces advanced, the treasure was relocated multiple times from cities like Warsaw, Kiev and Riga to Kazan and Novgorod. Historical accounts report that up to 500 tons of gold and 28 train wagons filled with silver were moved to Kazan alone. Much of it remains unaccounted for today.

#7 28t Nazi Gold

Value: €5 billion

Nazi gold refers to the vast quantity of valuables stolen by the Nazi regime during World War II from private citizens, banks and occupied nations. The total amount includes roughly 28 tons of pure gold valued at around €5 billion today.

Many legends claim that parts of the gold were hidden across Europe — buried in wells, concealed in castles or sunk in lakes. One well-known account describes SS units hiding 28 tons of gold in a well in Wroclaw before destroying the site.

#8 Spanish Silver Fleet

Silver and trade goods

The Spanish Silver Fleet was a merchant convoy system established in the 17th century to transport goods between Spain and its colonies. The ships carried silver from the Americas, along with trade goods from Asia brought across the Pacific via the Manila Galleons.

Many ships of the fleet were lost to storms or pirate attacks, and their cargoes remain undiscovered to this day, inspiring treasure hunters worldwide.

#9 Templar Treasure

Value: €17 billion

The legendary Templar Treasure was allegedly hidden in 1307 when King Philip IV ordered the arrest of the Knights Templar. The treasure — consisting of gold coins, gem-inlaid furniture and financial documents — was secretly transported away by Templar leaders shortly before the arrests began.

Modern theories place the hidden treasure in locations such as Rennes-le-Château in France, Rosslyn Chapel in Scotland and the Money Pit on Oak Island in Canada. Despite extensive searches, its whereabouts remain unknown.

#10 The Nibelung Treasure

144 barrows of gold and gemstones

The Nibelung Treasure traces back to the medieval German epic, the Nibelungenlied. According to the legend, Hagen of Tronje sunk the treasure in the Rhine after slaying Siegfried. The hoard is said to include 144 barrows filled with gold and precious stones.

Though shifting river currents may have buried or carried away the treasure, enthusiasts still search for it near Worms — the historical seat of the Burgundians.

#11 Pirate Treasures on Cocos Island

Gold and Silver

Cocos Island, a remote Costa Rican territory, is said to harbor not one but three separate pirate treasures. Among them is the legendary Church Treasure of Lima, spirited away during political upheaval in Peru. Additional hoards are attributed to the infamous pirates Benito Bonito and Edward Davies.

Treasure lore claims that several hundred kilograms of gold and silver lie buried somewhere on the island. However, since Cocos Island is now a protected nature reserve, all treasure-hunting activities have been temporarily halted — leaving its secrets undisturbed.
